Medical Device Packaging
Cymedica

Developed sustainable packaging solutions for Cymedica's innovative patented medical device, balancing environmental responsibility with functional performance and user-centered design. The project resulted in three distinct packaging concepts that explored alternative sustainable materials and manufacturing processes while maintaining the clinical credibility and usability required for medical device distribution and end-user experience.
Project Challenge
Cymedica sought to differentiate their new medical device through environmentally conscious packaging—a relatively uncommon approach in the medical device industry. The challenge was to identify sustainable materials and manufacturing methods that met regulatory requirements, could scale for production, protected the device integrity, and created an intuitive unboxing and usage experience for healthcare professionals and patients.

My Role & Contributions
I led the exploratory design phase, translating sustainability goals into tangible packaging solutions:
- Design Exploration & Ideation — Used rapid 2D sketching and 3D modeling techniques to quickly generate and test multiple packaging concepts, exploring material options, form factor variations, and structural approaches
- Sustainable Material Research — Investigated environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes that could meet medical device packaging requirements while reducing environmental impact
- User-Centered Design — Prioritized accessibility and usability in each concept, considering how healthcare professionals and patients would interact with the packaging, access the device, and understand product information
- Form & Color Development — Thoughtfully explored how form and color could communicate the device's innovative nature and sustainability commitment while maintaining medical credibility and professional aesthetics
- Scalability Consideration — Ensured each concept could realistically scale to production volumes while maintaining design integrity and cost efficiency
- Client Visualization — Created compelling visual presentations using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to communicate design intent, material choices, and user experience benefits to Cymedica stakeholders

Developed a cost-effective, assembly-efficient packaging solution prioritizing manufacturability and production scalability. Through rapid paper prototyping with readily available materials, I evaluated construction methods, assembly workflows, and how the packaging integrated with the medical device and accompanying information. This concept demonstrated that sustainable packaging doesn't require premium production techniques—thoughtful design and smart material selection can deliver strong user experience and brand presence at accessible price points. The solution balanced ease of assembly, intuitive product onboarding, and brand visual language while maintaining optimal margins for production scale.

Explored an elevated packaging solution utilizing advanced molded paper manufacturing techniques to achieve refined form language and enhanced visual impact. Paper prototyping validated the feasibility of complex molded geometries and confirmed how sophisticated production methods could create a distinctive, premium unboxing experience. This concept demonstrated the brand elevation possible through investing in advanced sustainable manufacturing, delivering memorable user experience while maintaining environmental commitment. The solution addressed cost, assembly complexity, brand positioning, and user-centered onboarding—offering Cymedica a high-impact option for market differentiation.
